Oi Kaftres: discovering ourselves through insta personae
In order to explore the spectrum of digital storytelling and transmedia narrative, four undergraduate students in the Department of History, Archeology and Social Anthropology seized the opportunity to (re)discover the world of social media and the discourses they create around “authenticity” while being online. To understand the world of Instagram influencers, they attempted to enter it through auto-ethnographic research.
They thus presented themselves masked with different personae in the Instagram world, each focused on developing a particular thematic (such as horoscopes), in their attempts to become “micro-celebrities”. @Madamghou (Aria), @ mean_imal.girl (Iliana), @senseless_wicca (Vasilina) and @dedoutside (Irene) came together to create @oi_kaftres, a team whose members complement each other and promote their most dynamic and joyful aspects on this platform. Each girl / persona created and worked on her own virtual identity on Instagram, in which she left the mark of her own character, and through which she acquired her own audience with which to interact on and off the platform.
These kinds of interactions, but also those that each girl has with the rest of the team, constitute the basis of this auto-ethnographic research. All the situations, the conversations, the difficult and funny moments of the group during this multimedia experiment are combined in an interactive documentary on the Klynt platform, in which the viewer has the opportunity to experience a more complete and backstage side of the girls behind the “masks”, the concerns and the difficulties, eventually reaching the point where the individual speaks as herself about her experience in this digital venture.
