SONIC EXPERIENCES
Anna Vs June
Crossing Paths | Live Concert
Anna Vs June is the solo project of Anna Papaioannou, a girl who enjoys playing with machines in her room, in the heart of Athens. Her sound aims to capture the equilibrium between electronic and traditional music by also encompassing her eastern and western music references. For her research she has travelled to remote rural villages recording songs from locals whilst practicing microtonal signing using her own voice. Her first EP, When You Can’t Dance, was produced in Edinburgh in 2016. At Data-stories, she will present her debut album Pros Per East Er, a collection of songs from different parts of Greece.

Crafting Music in the Digital World | Sound Ethnography Project
Abundance of sound data – what does it mean for a contemporary composer? Since the invention of the phonograph, a once volatile sound gained a kind of materiality; it “is there”, on a record or on a piece of tape (nowadays on a hard disc), detached from its context, available for revisiting and for a posteriori manipulation. Acquiring a recorded, written form, sound is being accumulated instead of ever-changing. In this way, sound is coming closer to the visual arts, where the artwork is a result and not a performance. When all kinds of sounds are accessible through recording technologies, composing is based upon sonic discoveries. Τhe composer is first of all a careful listener, discovering that once “non-musical” sounds are rich in emotional content. Is the composer, in the final analysis, something like a DJ, mashing up the sounds of the world around him? I’ll try to shed some light on these and similar questions, mainly drawing on my own experience as a composer since the early 1980’s, and presenting some examples of the music I have crafted in the context of this internet-based contemporary world.
